President's Report

Happy New Year and welcome to 2017!  I trust everyone had a nice holiday season and is ready to get back at it and headed to the mountains for some R&R!

Although we were fewer in number than we would have liked, I think everyone at the Ski Club Christmas Party had a good time.  A big SHOUT OUT to Vince and all those who assisted and made the party happen!  We had a DJ/Karaoke guy that did a good job.  It took Eddie Johnson showing up to break the ice on the Karaoke but once it got started it was really on a roll!  Eddie toasted one of our members that was conspicuously absent this year - Jay Menger.  For many years, Jay managed the ‘bar’ at the Christmas party and made sure everyone had sufficient Christmas ‘cheer’!  Jay was missed!  If you weren’t at the party this year, you really missed a nice evening!  Make plans now to attend next year.

Attendance at the Warren Miller production of “Here, There & Everywhere”, shown at the Circle Cinema exceeded expectations.  We plan to host the Warren Miller 2017 production again this fall and will do our best to plan more in advance, do more promotion and get attendance up significantly.  The movie was great and everyone seemed to enjoy it.   Stay tuned for next year!

The Tulsa Ski Club evening at Sun & Ski was a nice event that followed the November SNO  They had another evening for preferred customer the night of the Warren Miller movie and all Ski Club members were invited.   They provided snacks, beer and wine and the store was open late just for our shopping pleasure.  Sun & Ski provided door prizes and offered discounts on purchases.  An added benefit that came as a surprise was a $10 in store credit provided for every $50 in purchases.  If managed properly, this equated to an effective 20% discount on the already discounted items.  Sun & Ski supports the club and appreciates the business our membership provides them.  When you shop there, be sure to mention the Ski Club so they’ll know we are buying from them (and you might get a slightly better deal!?).

We had a good number of people participate on the Christmas/New Year’s break trip to Wolf Creek.  They had ‘tons’ of snow and I’m told everyone had a great time.  Thanks to Toni Sophy for doing a great job managing that trip!

Flatlands/Steamboat Springs leaves two weeks from today!  Looking forward to another great trip and another Trophy for the Tulsa Ski Club.  Thanks to Dick Watts’ management of the racing and competition strategy, we look forward to the Sweepstakes Trophy residing in Tulsa for another year!  HOWDY, HOWDY, LET’S GET ROWDY!!!!!!

The Taos trip is still light on numbers.  If you are considering going on this trip, please sign up now and drag some of your friends with you!  The board will be reviewing the participation on this trip upon the return from Flatlands wo don’t procrastinate.

The board is comprised of numerous volunteers and everyone works hard to make the club as relevant and meaningful as possible.  Due to the hard work and responsible management of the decades (50+ years) of people that have served before us, the club has a comfortable ‘nest-egg’ that allows us to make deposits on trips and enter each season without too much concern regarding cash flow.  The board takes very seriously the responsibility of safeguarding the finances.  In order to preserve this position for future years, the board is forced to evaluate every trip as it develops to determine if there is sufficient support for the trip to go out.  When trips are budgeted and priced to ‘break even’ it takes a long time to make up for losses on trips that are insufficiently supported.  Sometimes, huge deposits are due and payable before a trip reaches critical mass.  These deadlines have to be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.  Unfortunately, from time to time, the board must cancel a trip in order to avoid the risk of significant financial loss.  It is never done without due consideration given to those people that have signed up for the trip and the inconvenience and hardship it may cause them.

Sadly, the contracts the resorts are offering today are more punitive than ever before with regard to changes and/or cancellation and the deadlines to change/cancel are getting pushed farther and farther out, making it more and more difficult to manage trips.  We do our best to negotiate the best terms we can but the industry seems to be moving against us.

Unfortunately, we have been in that position twice this year.  The President’s Day trip to Crested Butte and the fly-out trip to Park City both had to be cancelled because significant payments/deposits were due (thousands of $$$) and the club didn’t have the commitments to support the trip.  Only AFTER the Crested Butte trip was cancelled did several people contact us to inform us that they were planning to go on the trip.  Please do yourself and the club a favor by signing up for trips “early and often”!!!!

If you are one of the victims of a trip cancellation, please accept our sincere apology and know that it is not something that is done lightly or without significant discussion and consideration for all effected.

January SNO will be on January 19 and Evan Elsberry check for details below.  February SNO will be enjoyed at a Tulsa Oilers ice hockey game – more details to follow.

As always, if you have any questions about the club please feel free to contact me via email, phone or text.
