President's Report

Wow.  I am sorry for those who missed the great Sign-up Picnic.  We had a great turnout and early sign-ups set some records.  If you are planning to join us on a trip this year, you may want to sign up by the October meeting so you don’t end up on the waiting list.

Snow in Colorado drives sign-ups in Tulsa.  Early snows have been a good start.  Forecast for the 2017-2018 snow in Colorado is normal to above normal.  I know two things: Angel Fire in February will have more vertical and snow than Tulsa.

We are having Skitoberfest in place of the October meeting.  What is, Skitoberfest?  What does that mean?  You take skiers, you take boarders, you take the social people, you take brats, you take refreshments, and you mix them up, what do you get, good times and good friends on a Tuesday night.  Skitoberfest is Octoberfest with free food and refreshments.

One of the benefits of club membership is good discounts at Sun and Ski.  Skiers Night Out will be there this month for some extra big discounts.  Don’t miss out.  Join us for the pre-SNO as well if you dare.

Anyone a Warren Miller fan?  Join us for the 3rd club get together of October and see it on the big screen.

A president’s report would not be complete without some unsolicited advice from me.  It is what I do best.  The first trip is just over two months away.  Flatlands is right around the corner.   Will you be ready?  Will your quads be toned or will they be screaming on your first run?  Are you on a 12-week get in ski shape plan or are you lazy, undisciplined, and weak?  Okay, that was a little harsh.  I apologize to all the lazy people.  Now get your butt off the couch, stop making excuses, and start doing squats and planks.  Maybe Toni Sophy will do another class?  That girl knows how to get you in shape.

See you at Skitoberfest

Texas Ski Council

Texas Ski Council Delegate’s Report

I returned last night from the Texas Ski Council Board and Delegate’s meeting in Dallas over the weekend.  The majority of the meeting was focused on three things:  1) 2018 Trips 2) the 2018 Bid-Fest meeting (for 2019 trips) and 3) board restructuring.  I’ll go into more detail on each of these three major topics below.

One of the terms of our membership in the Texas Ski Council is a commitment to support and participate in at least one Texas Ski Council trip each year.  The structure of their trips is a significant deviation from what the Tulsa Ski Club has traditionally done.

Most of their trips are a Saturday arrival to Saturday departure and are a ground-only package.  You provide your own transportation to and from the destination.  If sufficient numbers from any one club or location are going, the tour operator will arrange group airfare and transportation to/from the resort upon arrival/departure.  The structure of the trip sounds very similar to the FSA trips we take every year – social activities, banquets, and competitive racing.  They start getting commitments for trip participation in June and by mid-September, things are pretty well locked down.  Going forward, the Tulsa Ski Club will have to move a little earlier in the year to accommodate the needs of the council’s tour operators.  They still have some open spots (pillows) for most of the trips for next year but time is short to secure space!!!!!

2018 Trips

Trip:                                 Destination:                                      Dates:

Traditional                         Steamboat Springs, CO                      Jan. 13 - 20

Winter Shootout                 Beaver Creek, CO                              Feb. 10 - 17

Final Showdown                 Park City, UT                                     Feb. 24 – Mar 3

Winter Expedition               Cortina, Italy                                     Jan. 27 – Feb. 3

SUMMER EXPEDITION         Patagonia, South America                  October 2018

I really need to provide trip leaders information regarding our participation (if any) in these trips by the end of this week.  If you are interested in participating, please contact me ASAP (bshelton@appliedct.com, 918-906-3174) so I can begin compiling and reporting the information to them.  REPEATING:  IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN GOING ON ANY OF THESE TRIPS, PLEASE CONTACT ME IMMEDIATELY!!!!  (Thanks in advance!)

2018 Bid-Fest Meeting

The meeting will again be held in San Antonio at the Drury Inn–Riverwalk on April 21-22, 2018.  In conjunction with the Bid-Fest meeting they also host a small trade show that includes representatives from many ski & adventure destinations in North- -America and Europe (along with an open bar!).  It’s a great opportunity to meet MANY industry representatives and to discuss future council and club trips.  Guests to the meeting are VERY WELCOME and encouraged to attend.  In short, you will witness 20-25 short presentations/pitches on potential destinations by tour operators and/or destination representatives.  At the conclusion of the presentations, the clubs will vote for the five trips for the following season/year.

The council negotiates great rates at the hotel that include both breakfast and wine/beer/drinks every evening.  It’s a great time of year to visit the San Antonio Riverwalk.  Make plans to attend now.  I’m sure you will enjoy it and find it very entertaining and useful.

Board Restructuring

Much like the Tulsa Ski Club has done over the past 5 (or so) years, the Texas Ski Council is ‘restructuring’ to become lean & mean in the information age.  Several changes to the by-laws and standing rules were discussed and approved.  The net effect is to reduce the size of the board by one or two members and to focus on a virtual presence (web site, social media, etc.).   If anyone is interested in learning more, please contact me and I’ll be more than happy to share the details.

One of the benefits of being a member of the Tulsa Ski Club is the reciprocity we enjoy with all of the clubs we are affiliated with through the Texas Ski Council and the Flatlands Ski Association.  Attached please find a compilation of all of the Tulsa Ski Club, Texas Ski Council and other club trips you are able to take with membership in the Tulsa Ski Club.  In total, there are over 40 ski trips and another 10 summer/other trips to be taken.  While both TxSC & FSA require clubs to recognized reciprocity, there is some latitude given on how they do it.  Some clubs will limit registration to members of their own club for a period of time before opening it up to members of other clubs.  In some cases, trips may ‘sell out’ before it every gets to that point.

There are trips to many exciting destinations throughout the world.  Please take a look to see if you find anything interesting.  Feel free to utilize the ‘active link’ in the spreadsheet for more information or contact me for assistance.

Thanks for your membership and participation.  If it weren’t for our members and the tireless effort put in by countless volunteers, we wouldn’t have a ski club!

As always, feel free to contact me with any questions or comments regarding this information or anything else that might be on your mind.

Best regards,
Brett Shelton
