President's Report

President’s Report - January 2018

In 2007, the Tulsa Ski Club had a trip on the schedule to Heavenly at Lake Tahoe.  The poster board said it was the “Flatlands Trip”.  I didn’t know what that meant but Piper and I hadn’t been to Lake Tahoe so we signed up.  From the moment we arrived at the Tulsa International Airport, things seemed different than the usual trip.  Anticipation built as we traveled and arrived at Heavenly but I was a rookie, I wasn’t aware of things to come over the next few days.  The Team Relay Race was followed by a Welcome Party and then two days of Challenge/Novice races while the team seemed excited about our chances as we reached the Awards Banquet.  Our chances for what I wondered?  Then it happened.  The Tulsa Ski Club shocked the world and pulled the upset over the Kansas City Ski Club.  Okay, shocked the world is a little too much but when you win something with a group of new friends, bonds are formed.  As the Race Director announces placing and you haven’t heard “Tulsa” through 2nd place, you can’t even hear them announce the winner, the roar has begun.  “Howdy howdy, lets get rowdy”.  The thing that makes it so great is everyone on the team helped.  Although it does help and medals are fun, you don’t have to be the fastest skier to help the club.  It is truly a team effort and it takes everyone.  You can help get points by filling brackets or participating in the Novice Race.  You help people run faster on the Team Relay by screaming your support.  You make friends, you build bonds, and you look forward to next year.  Now we are on our way to Snowmass for 2018’s Flatlands Ski Week.  By the time you read this, it may be too late and the trip may be full.  If it isn’t, don’t miss out.  Join the Tulsa Ski Club Race Team.  Help us bring that trophy back to Tulsa.

Did you come to the 1st Annual Tulsa Ski Club Winter Games?  If you did, I hope you had as much fun as I did.  If you did not make the party, you missed a great time.  Attendance was up 4,000% over 2016 and people are already looking forward to the 2nd Annual TSC Winter Games.   Champions were crowned, rivalries were born, and memories were made.

Thank you to those who worked hard bringing it together beginning with Penny Shelton but not to exclude Evan Elsberry, Sasha VanDyke, Katie Roberts, Dick Watts, Shannon Todd, Brett Shelton, and Darla Foster, and Robert Foster.

Looking forward to 2018, the economy is going strong and trip signups are up.  Now we need some snow.  It has been slow to fall in the Southern Rockies this year but this could bring good news.  According to The Colorado Daily Snow, a winter with a slow start has a strong finishes.  January through March snowfall should be strong and the forecast has storms dumping one after another as the Jet Stream takes a more southerly path.  If the mountains get 40 inches or 400 inches, I for one will get as much vertical as I can.

Michael Messimore, President

Staying in Ski Condition

Here's a video with some exercises to get you into ski shape! Some of our members love to do yoga, run, or cycle to stay and get in shape for ski season. The exercises below will help you build a strong foundation as you ski! Please remember to always work within your abilities and check with your doctor if you have any health problems that may prohibit you from doing any of these exercises. Having trouble viewing it in the email you can see it here

Winter Trips

TSC had a few members join the OKC Ski Club for an early season trip at Crested Butte where they joined in the 5h Annual Santa Ski. Crested Butte was working on breaking their World Record of the most number of skiers in full Santa costumes. Marshall McAdams participated and was kind enough to share a video with us.
